Women's Hockey Falls to #1 Harvard

Crimson claim 5-0 victory over Engineers

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Freshman Katharine Chute (Wayzata, MN/Blake School) tallied two goals and added an assist to lead Harvard University, the top-ranked team in the nation, to a 5-0 win over Rensselaer in ECAC Hockey action this afternoon. The Crimson improve to 22-1-0 overall and remain perfect at 18-0-0 in the league. The Engineers are now 12-12-5 and 5-9-4 in the league.

The Crimson came out firing in the opening period, getting on the board at the 3:40 mark on a tally by freshman Katharine Chute (Wayzata, MN/Blake School). She was assisted on the even-strength tally by freshman Kate Buesser (Wolfeboro, NH/Brewster Academy) and senior Caitlin Cahow (Vinalhaven, ME/Hotchkiss School).

Harvard built up a 2-0 advantage less than six minutes later when junior Jenny Brine (Truro, NS/Cobequid) converted on the power play for her 13th goal of the season. Cahow and freshman Liza Ryabinka (Kharkiv, Ukraine/Berkshire School) picked up the assists on the goal, which came at 9:30.

Sophomore Jen Brawn (Surrey, BC/Southridge School) made it a three-goal lead for the homestanding Crimson at 13:30 of the second stanza. Earning the assists on the extra-man goal were Chute and Buesser.

In the final period, Harvard extended its lead behind goals from junior Sarah Vaillancourt (Sherbrooke, PQ/Pomfret School) and Chute. Vaillancourt, who now leads the team with 15 goals, scored at 5:42 unassisted before Chute closed the door with her second goal of the game at 12:05.

Harvard, which outshot the Engineers, 35-18, saw sophomore netminder Christina Kessler (Oakville, ON/Oakville Trafalgar) stop all 18 RPI shots. Junior netminder Ashley Mayr (Burnaby, BC/BC Breakers) shouldered the loss, making 30 saves.

The Engineers return to action next weekend in their final regular season home weekend. RPI welcomes Colgate on Friday at the Houston Field House (7pm) and hosts Cornell on Saturday (4pm). Friday’s game will showcase RPI’s “pink” jerseys while Saturday game will honor the team’s four seniors.
