Baseball Defeats Husson, 10-1

Red Hawks use 17 hit attack to improve to 2-0

ST. LEO, Fla. – Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) belted out 10 runs on 17 hits in defeating Husson College, 10-1, in a non-league Division III baseball game at St. Leo University. The Red Hawks improve to 2-0 while Husson falls to 2-6.

Rensselaer was led by junior third baseman Jim Devine (Castleton, NY/Columbia), who went 4 for 6 with two doubles, a home run and four runs batted in. Also starring offensively was senior shortstop Matt Muscatiello (Kinderhook, NY/Ichabod Crane), who was 4 for 5 with four runs and two doubles.

Junior centerfielder Sean Wilkes (Troy, NY/Catholic Central) added three hits in five at bats with three runs and three RBI and senior outfielder Dan Valentine (Goshen, CT/Avon Old Farms) was 2 for 4 with an RBI.

On the mound, senior righthander Tim Klein (Westwood, NJ/St. Joseph Regional) picked up the win by going 6.0 innings. He allowed one run on six hits while striking out five.

The Red Hawks continue their trip on Tuesday with a doubleheader against Arcadia starting at 9:30am at St Leo University. RPI’s starting pitchers are sophomore Andrew Mondo (Clfiton Park, NY/Shenedenhowa) and junior Andy Opperman (Oneida, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill).
