Baseball Moves to 4-0 With Sweep of Arcadia

TAMPA, Fla. - Behind two 2-run home runs from Jim Devine (Castleton, NY/Columbia) and a fine pitching outing from sophomore Andrew Mondo (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa), the Rensseler Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team defeated Arcadia, 7-4, before downing the Knights, 14-1, in game 2. With the wins, the Red Hawks improve to 4-0 on the young season.

Devine hit his home runs in his first two at bats of the game and ended up 2 for 3 with four runs batted in.  Junior Sean Wilkes (Troy, NY/Catholic Central) also contributed, going 2 for 3 with two runs and an RBI.

On the mound, Mondo scattered six hits and gave up three earned runs while striking out four batters in 5.1 innings of work. Senior Ken Carroll (Shelton, CT/Fairfield Prep) came on in relief to get the final out for his first save of the year.

In game two, Junior Andy Opperman (Oneida, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) delivered a strong pitching performance, going 5.0 innings to pick up his first win of the year. He gave up three hits and struck out three. Sophomore Camden Mamigonian (Dover, NH/Dover) led the way offensively, going 3 for 4 with a double and three runs batted in. Classmate Patrick Reardon (Troy, NY/LaSalle Institute) also went 2 for 4 with two runs and an RBI.

The Red Hawks are back in action on Wednesday when they take on Rhode Island College (1pm) in St Petersburg.  Sophomore John Dreimiller (Ticonderoga, NY/Ticonderoga) is scheduled to start.
