FT. MYERS, Fla. – Freshman Genevieve Falco (Seaford, NY/Seaford) went 4 for 4 with two triples and a double, while driving in two runs, to help the Rensselaer softball team beat Albion, 12-1, in six innings. With the victory the Red Hawks improve to 4-2 on the season, while the Britons, who had won three straight games coming in, fall to 4-2.
Game 2
Rensselaer jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, when junior Sara Finkbeiner (Napanoch, NY/Ellenville) led off the game with a base hit. She was driven in by sophomore captain Becky Bailey (Rome, NY/Holland Patent) who singled up the middle. After freshman Jen Bach (Lansdale, PA/Gwynedd Mercy Academy) and Julianne Bass (Costa Mesa, CA/Newport Harbor) reached base, Falco capped the rally with a run scoring triple.
The Red Hawks scored three more runs in the third inning, to take a 6-0 advantage. The offensive catalyst was Falco once again, as her double scored Bach and moved Bass to third after each had reached with singles to kick start the inning. Bass and Falco both came in to score on a Britons error and a two-out RBI single from Rensselaer freshman Alysa Rochminski (Schenectady, NY/Colonie).
Senior captain Courtney Sweeney (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) drove in a game-high three runs for Rensselaer.
RPI scored a run in the 5th and five more in the top of the 6th, before Albion’s Amanda Rapelje (East Lansing, MI/Haslett) hit a sacrifice fly to right in the bottom half of the inning.
Junior hurler Michelle Street (East Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa) pitched all 7.0 innings to earn her second win of the season (2-1). She allowed one run on three hits, while striking out five and walking three.
Game 1
Sophomore Michelle Bianchetti (Highland Mills, NY/John S. Burke Catholic) hit a grand slam in her first career at bat, driving in all four runs for Rensselaer, who defeated Eastern Nazarene, 4-1, this morning. Bianchetti's slam aided her own pitching performance, as she threw all 7.0 innings in picking up the victory. She allowed just one run on three hits, while striking out eight Crusaders.
Bianchetti finished 2 for 3 at the plate, with the four runs batted in and a run scored. Also contributing offensively was Finkbeiner, who ended up 3 for 4 at the dish.
RPI held the Crusaders scoreless until the bottom of the 7th.
