ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Rallying from two runs down in the eighth inning, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team came back to beat Rhode Island College, 9-7, at Eckerd College, this afternoon. With the victory the Red Hawks improve to 5-0 on the season, while the Anchormen fall to 5-2.
After scoring one in the eighth inning, RPI’s three-run ninth began with a single by senior Matt Muscatiello (Kinderhook, NY/Ichabod Crane). Freshman Josh Brooks (Lake Katrine, NY/Kingston) then drove a double off the wall in left-center to score Muscatiello. A wild pitch sent Brooks to third and junior Jim Devine (Castleton, NY/Columbia) followed by hitting the next pitch into center to give the Red Hawks the lead.
After a fielder’s choice and an error, sophomore Camden Mamigonian (Dover, NH/Dover) knocked in senior Dan Valentine (Goshen, CT/Avon Old Farms) from third with a deep sac fly to left, which finished the scoring.
Rensselaer was led offensively by Devine who went 3 for 5 with a double, two runs scored and two runs batted in. Mamigonian also faired well at the plate, going 2 for 4 with two RBI.
Freshman Tyler Agneta (Colonie, NY/Colonie) pitched well in relief, going 4.0 innings giving up two runs and striking out five to earn his first collegiate win.
The Red Hawks return to action tomorrow against Mount Union College (3pm) at Miller Huggins Field in St Petersburg. Senior Ken Carroll (Shelton, CT/Fairfield Prep) is scheduled to make the start for RPI.
