ONEONTA, N.Y. - Rensselaer freshman Stephanie Caouette (Wynantskill, NY/Columbia) scored three goals, including the game-winner with 59 seconds left in overtime, to help the Red Hawks to a 11-10 victory at Oneonta St. on Wednesday.
Caouette’s final goal came on a free position shot and was the only marker either team scored in overtime. With the win, the Red Hawks move to 4-1 while the Red Dragons dropped their first game of the season and are also 4-1.
Oneonta jumped out to a 4-0 lead to open the game before Rensselaer fought back, closing the deficit to one, 6-5, at the half. Red Dragon sophomore Lauren Portnoy (Sea Cliff, NY/North Shore) led all players with four goals on the day, including two in Oneonta’s opening 4-0 run.
The Red Hawks tied the game 1:11 into the second half when sophomore Sam Fennessey (Gansevoort, NY/Saratoga Springs) scored on a free position shot to make it 6-6. After a goal by Oneonta junior Jenna Fingar (Penn Yan, NY/Pen Yan Academy) made it 7-6, the visitors scored three straight goals to take a 9-7 lead with 19:50 remaining in regulation.
Back-to-back goals by Portnoy tied the game at 9-9 with 7:57 to play before freshman Hillary Jacobson (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville North) gave Oneonta the lead with with 5:51 left on the clock. Trailing with less than a minute to play, Fennessey answered for Rensselaer tying the game at 10 apiece with 24 seconds left in regulation.
The game appeared to be headed to a sudden death second overtime period before Rensselaer drew a foul that gave Caouette a free position shot with 59 seconds showig on the clock. Following Caouette’s goal the Red Hawks won the draw control and held possession of the ball time expired.
Rensselaer is back in action on Saturday when it hosts Nazareth at Lower Renwyck Field at 2:30pm. The Red Dragons take to the road on Saturday at Rochester (1pm).
