TROY, N.Y. – Sophomore Sam Fennessey (Gansevoort, NY/Saratoga Springs) scored three goals and added an assist as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's lacrosse team recorded seven second half goals enroute to a 10-6 victory over 20th-ranked Nazareth College. The Red Hawks improve to 5-1 while the Golden Flyers drop to 2-2.
Fennessey opened the scoring for RPI just under five minutes into the game. An unassisted tally by Nazareth sophomore Nora Davis (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Ludden) at 18:16 pulled the teams even at 1-1.
The homestanding Red Hawks led by as many at two (3-1) on goals by Fennessey and senior Natalie White (Guilford, CT/Guilford) before the Golden Flyers jumped back in to tie the score at halftime. Senior Caity Richardson (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) and Davis both scored to even the game.
In the second half, Fennessey pulled Rensselaer ahead once more with her third tally, but Nazareth came back to tie the game, 4-4, at 26:35. The Red Hawks, who outshot the Flyers, 26-17 in the game, saw junior Emily Donowick (West Seneca, NY/Nichols School) and freshman Stephanie Caouette (Wynantskill, NY/Columbia) score to make it 6-4 with 24:47 left to play.
Davis scored again for the Golden Flyers but Nazareth was unable to stop the RPI offense as junior Kerri Clark (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) scored three consecutive goals to give the Red Hawks a 10-5 lead with 3:44 remaining.
In addition to Fennessey and Clark, who finished with three tallies, Rensselaer saw Caouette post two goals and an assist. White added a goal and an assist for RPI, which got four saves from sophomore Ariana Hood (Severn, MD/Old Mill). Hood improves to 5-0 for Rensselaer, which defeated the Golden Flyers for the first time in its last nine tries.
For Nazareth, Davis finished with three goals while freshman Michelle Cook (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) added two tallies. Junior goalie Maria Fusco (Chaumont, NY/Immaculate Heart) made 10 saves in the loss.
RPI returns to action next Saturday when it hosts nationally-ranked William Smith in the Liberty League opener for both teams. That game is set for 2pm on Lower Renwyck Field. Nazareth also returns on Saturday when it hosts RIT at 1pm.
