TROY, N.Y. – The 23rd-ranked Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team used a pair of big innings to complete a four-game sweep of Clarkson at Robison Field. The Red Hawks scored eight runs in the 2nd inning of a 10-5 win in game one and scored seven runs in the 3rd inning of game two on their way to a 17-8 win. RPI improves to 11-1 overall (4-0 Liberty League), while the Golden Knights fall to 5-8 (0-4 LL).
Sophomore Camden Mamigonian (Dover, NH/Dover) highlighted the Red Hawks eight-run 2nd inning in game one with two hits, including a single to lead of the inning and a two-run double later in the 2nd.
The Golden Knights quickly cut the Rensselaer lead to 8-5, scoring three runs in the bottom of the 2nd and two in the 3rd, but did not score again. Matt Holiday (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Ludden) opened the scoring for Clarkson with a solo home run and later added a double and a steal. He finished 2 for 4 with a double, two runs scored and a run batted in.
RPI seniors Shane Griffin (Hudson, NY/Hudson) and Ken Carroll (Shelton, CT/Fairfield Prep.) added RBI doubles in the 7th to finish the scoring for the Red Hawks. Griffin ended up 1 for 3 with two runs and two RBI, while Carroll was 2 for 4 with one run and one RBI.
Sophomore starting pitcher Andrew Mondo (Clifton Park, NY/Shenedehowa) improved to 2-0 on the year. In 6.0 innings of work, he allowed five runs (3 earned) on eight hits, surrendering just one walk, while striking out seven.
In game two, RPI outscored Clarkson 11-5 over the first four innings, including a seven-run top of the 3rd, on its way to its fifth straight win. Once again Mamigonian paced the Red Hawks offensively, going 4 for 5, with a double, two runs scored and two runs batted in.
Freshman Tyler Agneta (Colonie, NY/Colonie) picked up his second victory, pitching 4.0 innings in relief of starter John Dreimiller (Ticonderoga, NY/Ticonderoga). Agneta allowed one run on three hits and a walk, while striking out five Golden Knights.
Leading Clarkson in game two was sophomore third baseman Sean Griffin (Walden, NY/Valley Central), who went 2 for 4, with a home run, a run scored and three runs batted in.
The Red Hawks return to action on Wednesday, when they host Plattsburgh State at Robison Field. Clarkson visits Union this Saturday (1pm) and Sunday (12pm).
