TROY, N.Y. – The 15th-ranked Rensselaer baseball team hit five home runs, including three in the 1st inning, on its way to defeating Plattsburgh St. 17-8, in a non-league contest this afternoon at Robison Field. With the win, the Red Hawks improve to 12-1 overall, while the Cardinals fall to 2-9.

Junior Jim Devine (Castleton, NY/Columbia) got RPI started with a one-out home run in the bottom of the 1st inning. Senior Dan Valentine (Goshen, CT/Avon Old Farms) followed that up with a double, before sophomore Patrick Reardon (Troy, NY/LaSalle Institute) hit the first of his two long balls on the day, to drive in two. After a groundout, sophomore first baseman Andrew Krushelnyski (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Brother Rice) hit a solo home run to give the Red Hawks an early 4-0 lead.

The Cardinals answered, scoring six runs in the top half of the third, to take a 6-4 lead. The offensive outburst was highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of junior first baseman Joe Curcio (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville).

After Rensselaer got one run back in the 3rd, back-to-back double from Devine and Valentine in the 4th, cut the Plattsburgh St. lead to 6-5. Sophomore Camden Mamigonian (Dover, NH/Dover) tied the game with a solo shot in the bottom of the 5th inning.

The Red Hawks then scored five runs on just four hits in the 6th, to open up an 11-6 advantage. Valentine and Reardon drove in runs with bases loaded walks, before Mamigonian drove in another with a single.

Devine finished the game 3 for 5, with a double, home run, three runs scored and two runs batted in. Mamigonian went 2 for 4, with a home run, three runs and two RBI, while Reardon ended up 2 for 4, with two home runs, two runs scored and five RBI.

Senior righthander Ken Carroll picked up his second win the season, allowing just one run on three hits in 5.1 innings of relief. He walked one and struck out three Cardinals.

Curcio ended his day 1 for 5, with a run scored and two runs batted in. Senior catcher Brandon Humphrey went 2 for 4, with a run scored and an RBI.

The Red Hawks return to action this weekend with a pair of double headers against Liberty League-rival Vassar. Rensselaer hosts the Brewers on Saturday at Robison Field (1pm), before traveling to Poughkeepsie on Sunday (1pm).
