TROY, N.Y. – Backed by four goals from senior midfielder Rachel Stahl (Baldwinsville, NY/Charles W. Barker), the 14th-ranked William Smith women’s lacrosse team defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 15-10, this afternoon at Renwyck Field. With the victory, the Herons improve to 5-0 on the season (2-0 Liberty League), while the Red Hawks fall to 5-2 (0-1 Liberty).
The first half saw William Smith build an early 3-1 lead at the 14:29 mark. The Red Hawks pulled even at 4-4, when senior Morgan Wahl (Lexington, MA/Lexington) finished an unassisted tally at with 8:59 remaining in the first.
After William Smith sophomore Sarah Goodkind (Greenwich, CT/Millbrook School) and Red Hawks’ freshman Stephanie Caouette (Wynantskill, NY/Columbia) traded goals, the Herons went on a 3-0 scoring run to take an 8-5 lead into halftime.
Rensselaer quickly tied the game, 3:26 in the second half. Caouette, fellow freshman Afton Marshall (Windham, NH/Salem) and Wahl all scored within a 2:07 span to even the game at 8 apiece.
The Herons then took the game over scoring seven straight times over a 17 minute stretch. Freshman Kara Grogan (West Simsbury, MA/Middlesex School) capped off the scoring spree with 3:17 to go in the game. Sophomore Sam Fennessey (Gansevoort, NY/Saratoga Springs) notched two late markers, including a free-position tally to bring the Red Hawks to within 15-10, with one minute remaining.
William Smith junior netminder Becky Josefiak (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca East) made six saves in picking up the victory. Sophomore Emily Perkins (Bow, NH/Bow), who entered in the game at the start of the second half, stopped four shots for Rensselaer, but was saddled with the loss.
RPI returns to action this Friday and Saturday when the visit Skidmore and Union, respectively. Both games will begin at 4pm. The Herons host Cortland on Tuesday (1pm).
