SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Senior Carly Strife (Ballston Spa, NY) led a balanced attack with three goals and two assists to lead visiting Rensselaer to a 14-7 women’s lacrosse victory over Western New England College in the season opener for both teams at rainy Golden Bear Stadium.
Freshman Stephanie Caouette (Wynantskill, NY) added three goals with an assist in her collegiate debut while sophomore Sam Fennessey (Gansevoort, NY) also netted three goals. Junior Kerri Clark (Saratoga Springs, NY) contributed two goals and an assist.
Sophomore Whitney Kukol (Johnson City, NY) chipped in a goal and assist while senior Morgan Wahl (Lexington, MA) and junior Emily Donowick (West Seneca, NY) had the remaining goals.
Sophomore goalie Ariana Hood (Severn, MD) compiled nine saves for the visitors.
RPI jumped to an early 4-0 lead when Caouette opened the scoring just
1:53 into the game. The Engineers took a 7-1 lead at half-time and coasted the rest of the way.
Senior Kaitlin Zangle (Wingdale, NY) led the Golden Bears with three goals and an assist while senior Jill Caracciolo (Burnt Hills, NY) and freshman Jeanmarie Barbato (Huntington Station, NY) each added a goal and assist. Juniors Lindsey Fenton (Pelham, MA) and Michelle Thompson (Wilbraham, MA) had the other goals for WNEC.
RPI returns to action on Thursday when it opens its home schedule against Hartwick. Game time is set for 4pm on Lower Renwyck Field.
