Senior Morgan Wahl scores three goals in Red Hawks 12-3 victory

TROY, N.Y. – Led by three goals from senior midfielder Morgan Wahl (Lexington, MA/Lexington), the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute women’s lacrosse team defeated Hartwick, 12-3, this afternoon at Renwyck Field. With the victory, the Red Hawks improve to 2-0 on the season, while the Hawks fall to 0-1.

Aiding Wahl’s efforts were sophomore Sam Fennessey (Gansevoort, NY/Saratoga Springs) and freshman Stephanie Caouette (Wynantskill, NY/Columbia) who added three and two goals, respectively. Fennessey also picked up a game-high nine ground balls.

Junior midfielder Kerri Clark (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) added a goal and an assist, while junior Emily Donowick (West Seneca, NY/Nichols School), sophomore Kathy Rogers (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) and freshman Afton Marshall (Windham, NH/Salem) each recorded a goal for Rensselaer.

Sophomore goalie Ariana Hood (Severn, MD/Old Mill) made ten saves in the cage for the Red Hawks.

Donowick opened the scoring less than three minutes in the game on a free possession shot. Hawks sophomore midfielder Katie Thorpe (South Windsor, CT/South Windsor) answered two minutes later to tie the game at 1-1.

The Red Hawks then went on a 6-0 scoring run over the next 15 minutes, which included all three of Wahl’s tallies. RPI, which led 8-2 after 30 minutes of play, scored the first four goals of the second half, before Hartwick’s Kelsey Campbell (Camillus, NY/West Genessee) scored with 1:38 remaining in the game. Campbell was assisted by sophomore Stephanie Nutt (Shirley, NY/Wm. Floyd) who dished a pass from behind the Red Hawks net for the tally.

Campbell led the Hawks with two goals, and had a game-high six shots on target. Hartwick freshman netminder Jen Kaye (Altamont, NY/Guilderland) recorded 13 saves.

RPI returns to action next Wednesday (5pm) in Florida, where they will take on Curry. It will then match up against Ithaca on Friday (9am).
