TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team scored eight runs on 10 hits in both games and the Red Hawks swept a non-league doubleheader from Mass. College of Liberal Arts (MCLA), 8-1 and 8-0, at Doris Robison Field. RPI has now won 11 straight games to improve to 17-3. The Trailblazers fall to 3-17.
Rensselaer won the first game behind three hits, two runs and two RBI from junior catcher Julianne Bass (Costa Mesa, CA/Newport Harbor). In the second, which ended after five innings, junior Michelle Street (East Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse) allowed just one hit while freshman Alysa Rochminski (Schenectady, NY/Colonie) collected three hits, including her first career home run, a run scored and three runs batted in.
In the opener, the Red Hawks scored three runs in the first inning, four in the fourth and one in the fifth for the 8-1 win. Bass had two singles and a double while Rochminski was 2 for 3 with a run. Freshmen Jen Bach (Lansdale, PA/Gwynedd Mercy Academy) and Felicia Bua (Gilford, NH/Gilford) combined to allow just four hits and no earned runs with seven strikeouts.
In the nightcap, Street gave up a single while striking out nine with no walks and RPI connected for three home runs. In addition to Rochminski’s, which came in the second inning, Bass and Courtney Sweeney (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) cleared the fence in a five-run fifth inning. Bass finished 2 for 3 with a run scored and two knocked home.
MCLA saw five different players record one hit apiece in the twinbill. From the circle, sophomore Maggie Kucharski (Greenfield, MA/Greenfield) suffered the loss in the first game and classmate Jen McMurray (Margaretville, NY/Margaretville Central) took the defeat in game two.
RPI is back in action on Sunday afternoon when it hosts St. Lawrence in a doubleheader at Robison Field (1pm). The Trailblazers host Mass. Maritime on Saturday at 1pm.
