ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Senior Beth Ameno allowed just two hits with eight strikeouts from the circle and went 2 for 2 with four RBI at the plate to lead Rochester to a 9-1 win over Rensselaer in game one of a Liberty League softball doubleheader. Ameno then came back to allow just five hits and no runs in the nightcap, an 8-0 Yellowjackets win.
RPI, which is now 21-7 overall and 2-2 in the league, opened the twinbill with first inning run in the first game. Junior Sara Finkbeiner (Napanoch, NY/Ellenville) opened with a bunt single and was sacrificed to second base. A two-out double by classmate Julianne Bass (Costa Mesa, CA/Newport Harbor) plated Finkbeiner for a 1-0 lead.
After being held off the scoreboard in its half of the first inning, Rochester scored twice in the second and third innings and five times in the fourth inning for the win. Ameno had a two-run home run in the second inning and a two-run single in the third. While pitching she allowed just two more base runners.
Red Hawks freshman Felicia Bua (Gilford, NH/Gilford) suffered the loss.
In the second game, Rochester scored twice in the first inning, five times in the fifth and once in the sixth inning to improve to 21-10 overall and 6-0 in the Liberty League. Ameno again posted eight strikeouts with no walks in the complete game effort.
Senior Logan Russell (Cranbury, NJ/Princeton) and sophomore Becky Bailey (Rome, NY/Holland Patent) both collected two of RPI's five hits while Finkbeiner had the other. Junior Michelle Street (East Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa) took the loss.
