WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The Williams softball team score three runs in each of the third and fourth innings and held on to defeat Rensselaer 6-4 this afternoon at Cole Field. Game two of the scheduled doubleheader was cancelled due to lightning. With the victory, the Ephs improve to 18-16 overall, while the Red Hawks fall to 23-8.
RPI jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third when Alysa Rochminski (Schenectady, NY) followed a Courtney Sweeney (Ballston Spa, NY) single with a two-run homer to left field.
Williams rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a one-run lead. Becky Sansone (Glen Gardner, NJ) drew a lead-off walk from RPI starter Michelle Street (E. Syracuse, NY). With one out, Libby Copeland-Halperin (New York, NY) grounded a single to left and was followed by senior Taryn Goodman (New York, NY), who lined an RBI-single to left. A wild pitch moved both runners up and Caitlyn Cain (Houston, TX) then ripped a single up the middle to score both runners.
Williams added three runs to its lead in the fourth. Two walks sandwiched around a Joey Lye (Scarborough, ON) single loaded the bases with no outs. Powers came up and stroked a line drive into the left-center field gap to score two. An error allowed Sansone to score the sixth run.
The Red Hawks rallied in the sixth when Becky Bailey (Rome, NY) walked and scored when Julianne Bass (Costa Mesa, CA) hit a home run to left-center. Eph’s reliever Emily Fowler-Cornfeld (St. Louis, MO) did not allow another hit. She retired the side in order to close out the game in the seventh to earn the save. In three innings, she allowed one hit, one walk and struck out six.
Eph first-year Mary Beth Daub (Claremont, CA) picked up the win, allowing two hits and two runs, while walking two and striking out three in 4.0 innings of work. Street took the loss, giving up five hits and three walks over 4.1 innings. She was charged with six runs (5 earned).
Bass finished the game 1 for 2 with a home run, a run scored and two runs batted in. Rochminski ended up 1 for 3 with a home run, a run and two RBI.
RPI returns to action this weekend with pair of home doubleheaders with league foes Union (3pm) and Skidmore (1pm) on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
