Box Score

TROY, N.Y. – Behind a home run from senior Kevin Flynn (Concord, MA/Concord Carlisle) and a four-run seventh inning, the Williams College baseball team defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 9-5, in non-conference action at Robison Field. The Ephs improve to 22-10 overall while the #19 Red Hawks drop to 27-9.

Williams got things going early, posting three runs on three hits in the top of the second inning. After a lead-off double by sophomore Robin Allemand (Ft. Lauderdale, FL/Pine Crest), freshman Barrett Allison (Amherst, MA/Amherst) belted out a two-run single for the lead.

The Red Hawks answered in the bottom of the fifth after junior Jim Devine (Castleton, NY/Castleton) delivered a double which drove in two runs and classmate Sean Wilkes (Troy, NY/Catholic Central) advanced home on a wild pitch.

The 3-3 tie was short-lived as Williams sophomore Chad Brown (Pittsfield, MA/Pittsfield) sent a long fly ball to right field to bring in a run. Flynn followed with his home run to deep right-centerfield to give the visiting Ephs a 5-3 lead after six complete.

Capitalizing on three Rensselaer errors, Williams extended its lead to 9-3 in the top of the seventh inning. Highlighting the charge were RBI singles from Allenmand and sophomore Al Mathews (North Hampton, NH/Phillips Exeter).

Rensselaer pounded out two runs on four hits in the bottom of the eighth inning to close the gap (9-5), but it wasn’t enough.

Leading the way for Williams was Allemand, who went 2 for 3 with three runs scored and an RBI. Flynn had two hits in five attempts with two runs scored while Mathews posted three hits, a run scored and an RBI. Sophomore Paul Burgdorf (Latham, NY/Shaker) picked up the victory for the Ephs, allowing just three runs (1 earned) on five hits with six strikeouts and no walks in 7.0 innings.

For Rensselaer, sophomore Andrew Krushelnyski (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Brother Rice) went 2 for 4 with a run batted in. Freshman Dan Stroud (Central Nyack, NY/Nyack) had two hits and a run scored while Devine had a hit and two RBI. Junior Andrew Novick (Hopewell Junction, NY/John Jay) suffered the loss for the Red Hawks, allowing five runs (2 earned) on four hits with a walk and two strikeouts in 1.1 innings.

Rensselaer returns to action on Saturday when it hosts a doubleheader against Skidmore at Robison Field (12pm). Williams is also in action on Saturday, traveling to MIT (12pm).
