Red Hawks capture 13-6 & 11-2 wins over Mount Saint Mary's

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Senior rightfielder Logan Russell (Cranbury, NJ/Princeton) belted out four hits, including two doubles, to lead Rensselaer to a two-game sweep of Mount Saint Mary College. The Red Hawks took game one, 13-6 before winning the rematch, 11-2. RPI is now 11-3 while the Blue Knights drop to 5-9.

Trailing 6-5 entering the sixth inning, Rensselaer came alive, putting up eight runs on eight hits enroute to the victory.  Russell highlighted the inning with a run-scoring double to right center field.  She also scored a run that inning.

The Red Hawks jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the top of the fourth inning before Mount Saint Mary came back, scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings to take a 6-5 lead.

Russell led the way going 3 for 4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Senior Beth Gargon (East Hampton, CT/East Hampton) also contributed, going a perfect 4 for 4 with two runs and two RBI.

Sophomore hurler Michelle Bianchetti (Highland Mills, NY/John S. Burke Catholic) started the game, allowing five runs on six hits through 4.1 innings before giving way to freshman Felicia Bua (Gilford, NH/Gilford). Bua, who picked up a win in Wednesday's sweep of Hamilton, allowed just one run on one hit through 2.2 innings.

Leading the way for the Blue Knights was catcher Jen Weiner, who went 1 for 2 with two runs and two RBI. Starting pitcher Erin Lappe went 4.0 innings, allowing five runs on eight hits before Christina Maiocco relieved.  She gave up eight runs on nine hits.

Game two saw the Red Hawks once again open the scoring, going up 1-0 after the first inning. RPI ahead 4-0 in the fourth inning behind a two-run triple off the bat of senior Courtney Sweeney (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa). After adding a pair of runs in the top of the fifth frame, Rensselaer opened the game wide open with a five-run six inning.

Picking up the victory was freshman Jen Bach (Lansdale, PA/Gwynedd Mercy Academy), who allowed just one run on three hits with three strikeouts. She also paced the visitors at the plate, going 3 for 4 with a run scored and four runs batted in. Among her three hits were two doubles.

For Mount Saint Mary, Erin Dammermuth went the distance, allowing 11 runs on 12 hits with two walks and a strikeout.

RPI returns to action on Sunday when it hosts Nazareth beginning at 1pm at Doris Robison Field. The Blue Knights are back in action on Saturday at Farmingdale State at 12pm.
