SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Freshman Felicia Bua allowed just four hits and one run with four strikeouts and no walks to lead the Rensselaer softball team to a 3-1 victory over Alfred in the Red Hawks opening game of the ECAC Tournament at Union College.
RPI, the second seed, improves to 27-11 and advances to the winners' bracket. The Red Hawks face Union, the top seed, at 4pm today. Alfred, the third seed, falls to 22-12 and plays Oneonta St. in an elimination game at 2pm. Union defeated Oneonta, 9-1, in the first game of the day.
Bua (Gilford, NH/Gilford) moved her personal record to 9-2 by giving up just two singles, a double and a home run in the complete game effort. Sophomore Holly Seidewand (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas), who allowed three runs on six hits, suffered the loss for the Saxons.
Rensselaer opened a 3-0 lead with two runs in the first inning and another in the second. RPI's first two batters of the game, Sara Finkbeiner (Napanoch, NY/Ellenville) and Becky Bailey (Rome, NY/Holland Patent), reached on a walk and single, respectively. The third place hitter, freshman Jen Bach (Lansdale, PA/Gwynedd Mercy Academy), drove them home with a double to centerfield. A Finkbeiner single in the second inning scored Logan Russell (Cranbury, NJ/Princeton) for RPI's third run.
Alfred cut its deficit to 3-1 on a fifth inning home run by sophomore Jessica Figallo (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood).
Bach finished the day by going 2 for 3 with two RBI while Finkbeiner had a hit, a run and a run batted in.
