Softball Defeated by Dutchwomen

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Union scored 10 runs in the first inning in defeating the Rensselaer softball team, 10-2, in a winners' bracket game of the ECAC Tournament.  The Dutchwomen, the top seed, improves to 31-6 and advances to Sunday's championship round.  The Red Hawks, the second seed, fall to 27-12 and now must win three games on Sunday to capture the title.  RPI opens Sunday's action in an elimination game against Alfred at 10am.

Union, which must win one game on Sunday for the tournament crown, got its 10 runs on seven hits in the bottom of the first inning.  Eight of the runs were earned.  Among the Dutchwomen's big hits was a two-RBI double by junior Bridget Graham (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park).

RPI got one run back in the second inning on a home run to centerfield by senior Beth Gargon (East Hampton, CT/East Hampton).  The Red Hawks second run came in the third inning on a bases loaded walk by junior Julianne Bass (Costa Mesa, CA/Newport Harbor).

Sophomore starter Michelle Bianchetti (Highland Mills, NY/John S. Burke Catholic) suffered the loss for RPI, which defeated Alfred, 3-1, earlier in the day.  Union sophomore Ginni Sack (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) earned the win.
