Engineers outscore Utica by 18 points in second stanza

TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's basketball team outscored Utica College by 18 points in the second half and the Engineers defeated the Pioneers, 69-54, Thursday evening at East Campus Arena. With the victory, RPI moves to 2-5 while the Pioneers fall to 5-2.

The Engineers made 47.6% (20 of 42) of their second half shots on its way to overcoming a 69-54 halftime deficit. Senior Amanda Brophy (Scituate, MA/Milton Academy) and graduate student Whitney Coleman (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Etiwanda) both tallied 10 points in the second stanza after tallying two and three first half points, respectively.

Coleman, a guard, added game-highs of 16 rebounds and six assists. She also had two blocks and a steal to pace the Engineers, who extended their winning streak over Utica to 13 straight contests, dating back to December 11, 1984. Brophy chipped in with six rebounds, including five offensive, and two assists. Also reaching double digits in points for RPI was sophomore Hillary McKinley (Quinebaug, CT), who had 10 points with five rebounds.

For Utica, who led by as many as 11 points in the first half, saw junior Devon Croll (Vernon, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) score a game-high 21 points. Classmate Jessica Berry (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) had 19 points, including 14 in the first half, and eight rebounds.

RPI returns to the court on Saturday at 2pm when it hosts Paul Smiths College. The Pioneers travel to Oneonta St. on Saturday for a 2pm tipoff.
