Men's Hockey Falls to #12 Cornell in Game 2

Big Red shuts out Engineers, 4-0, in penalty-ridden affair

Box Score

ITHACA, N.Y. – Senior Evan Barlow (Strathmore, AB/Salmon Arm Silverbacks) scored two power-play goals, including the eventual game-winner, as the second-seeded and 12th-ranked Cornell University men's hockey defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 4-0, in Game 2 of the ECAC Hockey Quarterfinals at Lynah Rink.

With the win the Big Red pull the three-game series even at 1-1 and improve to 19-8-4 on the season. The Engineers move to 10-26-2 overall.

Cornell opened the scoring at 18:30 of the first period when Barlow drove home a one-timer from the right circle. He received a cross-ice pass from junior Blake Gallagher (Dartmouth, NS/Notre Dame Hounds) and shot the puck low and inside the near post. The tally, which was Barlow's eighth of the season, came on the 5-on-3 man advantage.

Sophomore Riley Nash (Kamloops, BC/Salmon Arm Silverbacks) pushed the Big Red advantage to 2-0 with an even strength marker at 13:14 of the second frame. After sophomore Michael Kennedy's (Dorchester, ON/St. Thomas Stars) shot from the point was blocked down, Nash quickly fired the rebound through the legs of RPI freshman netminder Allen York (Wetaskiwin, AB/Camrose Kodiaks) for his 12th of the year. Junior Brendon Nash (Kamloops, BC/Salmon Arm Silverbacks) earned the second helper.

Barlow gave the hosts a 3-0 lead on his second power-play goal just 19 seconds left in the second. He picked up a rebound at the left of the RPI crease and stuffed it in past York for his ninth of the season. Assists on the goal went to Brendon Nash and sophomore Mike Devin (Scituate, MA/Nanaimo Clippers).

Once again with the 5-on-3 advantage, Cornell senior captain Colin Greening (St. John's, PN/Nanaimo Clippers) buried a rebound at the right of the RPI cage to bring the game to its final margin at 18:47 of the final stanza.

York, who made 40 saves through the first two periods, was replaced by senior Mathias Lange (Klagenfurt, Austria/New York Apple Core) to start the third. Lange finished with 12 stops. Cornell junior goaltender Ben Scrivens (Spruce Grove, AB/Spruce Grove Saints) earned the victory, making nine saves.

The game included 28 penalties, for a total of  59 minutes. RPI was assessed 19 of those for 41 minutes. The Big Red went 3 for 16 on the power play, while the Engineers were unsuccessful on six man advantage opportunities.

Game three will take place tomorrow night (7pm), with the winner advancing the ECACH Semi-finals next Friday at the Times Union Center in Albany.
