Box Score

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell University men's hockey team scored three goals in the second period and held on for a 4-3 victory over Rensselaer in Game 3 of the ECAC Hockey Quarterfinal, at Lynah Rink.

With the victory, the Big Red improves to 20-8-4 and advance to the ECACH Semifinals next Friday at the Times Union Center in Albany. The Engineers conclude their season with a 10-27-2 mark.

Trailing 4-2, RPI pulled their goalie with a minute and a half to play. The Engineers sustained pressure in the Big Red zone led to a goal from Jeff Foss' (Moorhead, MN/Moorhead High School) that brought the game to within a goal with 56 seconds on the clock. His shot from the right point found the top left corner of the Cornell net. The Engineers were unable to get another shot as the Big Red was able to hold on for the win.

Scoring his third goal in two games, junior Evan Barlow (Starthmore, AB/Salmon Arm Silverbacks) gave the hosts a 1-0 lead at 17:05 of the opening frame. Skating out from behind the RPI net, he beat freshman goaltender Allen York (Wetaskiwin, AB/Camrose Kodiaks) from just inside the right circle.

The Engineers went into the first intermission with a 13-8 edge in shots on goal. RPI was unable to convert on a pair of first period power-plays, but did generate five shots. The Big Red was unsuccessful on their only man-advantage opportunity.

RPI senior captain Matt Angers-Goulet (St. Augustin, PQ/Notre Dame Hounds) notched a shorthanded marker that tied the game at one, midway (11:32) through the second period. After the puck was gloved down in the Engineers' high slot, Angers-Goulet broke up ice on a 2-on-1 with brother Alex Angers-Goulet (St. Augustin, PQ/Langley Chiefs). Matt skated in and ripped a shot over the right shoulder of Cornell junior netminder Ben Scrivens (Spruce Grove, AB/Spruce Grove Saints).

The Big Red then answered with three straight goals to take a 4-1 lead.

Barlow netted his second of the game on the power-play, as his shot from the right point found its way through a screen in front and beat York five-hole at 12:13 of the second. Brendon Nash (Kamloops, BC/Salmon Arm Silverbacks) and Riley Nash (Kamloops, BC/Salmon Arm Silverbacks) earned the assists on the go-ahead goal.

Cornell went up by two (3-1) when freshman defenseman Kier Ross (McKinney, TX/Omaha Lancers) stuffed home a rebound at 14:25 of the second stanza.

Senior captain Michael Kennedy (Dorchester, ON/St. Thomas Stars) gave the Big Red 4-1 lead less than a minute and a half later. Entering the RPI zone 2-on-2, the initial shot from freshman Locke Jillson (Dallas, TX/Indiana Ice) was saved, but the rebound fell right to the doorstep to Kennedy for the finish.

RPI sophomore Scott Hapern (Boca Raton, FL/Bay State Breakers) brought the visitors to within two (4-2), 5:16 into the third period. Crashing the net after a shot by Joel Malchuk (Brandon, MB/Dauphin) was turned away, Halpern found the puck at his feet on the edge of the crease and backhanded it in.

Scrivens earned the win, making 31 saves, while York finished with 22 stops for the Engineers.
