TROY, N.Y. – Senior and second-year captain
John Kennedy (Saginaw, MI/St. Louis Bandits) scored the only shootout goal as the Rensselaer men's hockey “White” team defeated the “Cherry” squad, 3-2, in the annual Cherry & White Scrimmage at the Houston Field House.
Kennedy beat sophomore netminder
Bryce Merriam (Bethel Park, PA/Topeka RoadRunners) glove-side on a snap shot, ending the scrimmage on a shootout for the second consecutive season. Junior
Alex Angers-Goulet (St. Augustine, PQ/Langley Chiefs) had the only multi-point night, picking up a goal and an assist for the “White” team.
Angers-Goulet's goal opened the scoring in the first period, before freshman
Johnny Rogic (North Vancouver, BC/Alberni Valley Bulldogs) squared the score at 1-1 on a nice centering pass from senior Scott Hapern (Boca Raton, FL/Bay State Breakers).
Senior
Joel Malchuk (Brandon, MB/Dauphin Kings) stuffed in a rebound to put the “White” side up 2-1, but the “Cherry” team answered, when junior
Mike Bergin (Ottawa, ON/Smiths Falls Bears) netted a third period goal from sophomore
Nick Bailen (Fredonia, NY/Indiana Ice) and senior
Chase Polacek (Edina, MN/Academy of Holy Angels).
The Engineers are back in action on Tuesday night, when they host the University of New Brunswick in an exhibition game at the Houston Field House (7pm).
