TROY, N.Y. – Travis Fullerton stopped 25 shots and Hunter Tremblay scored twice to lead the University of New Brunswick men's hockey team to a 4-1 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in an exhibition game at the Houston Field House.

New Brunswick jumped out to a lead just seven seconds into the first period when forward Tremblay (Timmins, ON) stole a pass in the Varsity Reds' offensive zone and snapped a shot past RPI goaltender Allen York (Wetaskiwin, AB/Camrose Kodiaks). The visitors, who controlled the first half of the period, doubled their lead when Chris Culligan (Howie Center, NS) beat two Engineers defenseman to a loose puck and broke in alone on York, scoring shorthanded from close range. Culligan's goal came at the 10:33 mark.

Rensselaer had a solid opportunity to cut its deficit to one when sophomore Greg Burgdoerfer (East Setauket, NY/Air Force Academy) saw his shot get kicked aside just after RPI killed off a penalty with 5:25 left in the opening frame. Junior Patrick Cullen (Washington, DC/Indiana Ice) also had a strong bid for the Engineers but was denied.

The Varsity Reds needed just 1:35 of the second period to build a 3-0 bulge, this goal coming off the stick of Jordan Clendenning (Fredericton, NB) on a rebound after a sprawling save by York. RPI cut the margin to 3-1 with a power play goal by junior defenseman Mike Bergin (Ottawa, ON/Smiths Falls Bears). After a scramble in front that saw several shots by the Engineers, the puck found its way to Bergin, who was just inside the left point. His shot found the back of the net with assists going to seniors Tyler Helfrich (Calgary, AB/Prince George Spruce Kings) and Chase Polacek (Edina, MN/Academy of Holy Angels).

RPI senior Joel Malchuk (Brandon, MB/Dauphin Kings), who had a good scoring chance just 15 seconds into the second period, had a breakaway with two minutes remaining but was denied. His attempt led to constant pressure and an Engineers' flurry but UNB's Fullerton (Riverview, NB) kept the puck out of the goal.

The third period saw Rensselaer put pressure on the Varsity Reds, including a 5x3 man-advantage that featured three high quality shots but the score remained the same. Tremblay then sealed the win with an unassisted, empty net goal.

Fullerton had six saves in the first period, 10 in the second and nine in the third for the win. York finished with 16 saves for RPI, while Bryce Merriam (Bethel Park, PA/Topeka RoadRunners) stopped all 11 shots he faced in 27:07 of relief.

RPI opens the regular season with a pair of games at Colorado College this weekend. The Engineers and Tigers meet on Friday at 9:30pm and Saturday at 9pm. All times are eastern.
