TROY, N.Y. – Sophomore
Nick Bailen recorded a goal and two assists, including the game-winning tally midway through overtime, to lift the 18th-ranked Rensselaer men's hockey team to a come-from-behind, 4-3, victory over 12th-ranked Union, on Black Saturday at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Engineers improve to 5-3-3 overall (2-2-0 ECAC Hockey), while the Dutchmen fall to 7-2-3 (2-1-1 ECACH).
With a 5-on-3 advantage in the extra frame, senior winger
Tyler Helfrich (Calgary, AB/Prince George Spruce Kings) sent a cross-ice pass to Bailen (Fredonia, NY/Indiana Ice) at the left circle. Bailen one-timed a shot off the left post and in at the 2:56 mark. Senior
Chase Polacek (Edina, MN/Academy of Holy Angels) earned the second assist on Bailen's fourth of the season.
The Engineers came back to tie the game twice in the final stanza, including an equalizing tally by sophomore Marty O'Grady (London, ON/Wellington Dukes) with 0.2 seconds on the clock. The goal, which tied the score at 3-3, came on the power-play and with an extra attacker. Junior defenseman
Mike Bergin (Ottawa, ON/Smiths Falls Bears) worked the puck down low to Polacek, before a scramble in front of the Union cage led to the tying goal by O'Grady.
Trailing 2-0 heading into the third period, the Engineers converted on a power-play that had carried over from the second. Bailen took a shot from the point that caromed off the back wall and right in front of the Union net. Junior
Patrick Cullen (Washington, DC/Indiana Ice) skated in to swat home his first of the season. The goal, which came at 1:02 of the frame, pulled the hosts to within 2-1.
Rensselaer drew even (2-2) on a shorthanded marker by senior
Joel Malchuk (Brandon, MB/Dauphin Kings) at 10:01 of the third. Bailen was involved once again, as his shot from the left point produced a rebound for Malchuk, who crashed the net and stuffed home his first goal of the year.
Union answered four minutes later when freshman Josh Jooris (Burlington, ON/Burlington Cougars) capitalized on a collapsed RPI penalty kill to give the Dutchmen the lead once again (3-2). Shots by sophomore Jeremy Welsh (Bayfield, ON/Oakville Blades) and senior Stephane Boileau (Blainville, PQ/Ste. Jerome Panthers) were turned away by RPI junior netminder
Allen York (Wetaskiwin, AB/Camrose Kodiaks) before Jooris' attempt snuck over the goal line.
The Engineers controlled play for much of the first period, outshooting Union, 14-2. Both sides went 0 for 1 on the man-advantage in the opening frame. Union then built a 2-0 lead in the second frame, getting goals from senior Justin Pallos (Glastonbury, CT/Boston Junior Bruins) and freshman Matt Hatch (Massena, NY/Alberni Valley Bulldogs).
York finished with 20 saves, while Dutchmen sophomore goaltender Keith Kinkaid (Farmingville, NY/St. Louis Bandits) made 31 stops at the other end of the ice. The Engineers are back in action on November 26 & 27, when they host the 60th Annual Rensselaer Holiday Tournament at the Houston Field House. Union visits league-foe Brown on December 3 (7pm).
