TROY, N.Y. – Sophomore netminder Allen York (Wetaskiwin, AB/Camrose Kodiaks) recorded 17 saves and the Rensselaer men's hockey team defeated Clarkson, 2-1, in front of 4,134 fans at the Houston Field House. With the win the Engineers improve to 15-12-3 (8-6-2 ECAC Hockey), while the Golden Knights fall to 5-20-3 (1-13-2 ECACH).

York (12-10-3) did the majority of his work in the second frame, stopping 12 shots. Golden Knights sophomore goaltender Paul Karpowich (Thunder Bay, ON/Wellington Dukes) finished with 33 stops, keeping the game close until the final horn.

Sophomore Mike Bergin (Ottawa, ON/Smiths Falls Bears) opened the scoring, on the power-play, at 9:01 of the first period. Junior Chase Polacek (Edina, MN/Academy of Holy Angels) drove the net from the left and had his shot blocked out to the high slot. Begin swooped in from the right point and buried a shot into the back of the net. Freshman Jerry D'Amigo (Binghamton, NY/U.S. National Under-18 Team) picked up the second helper on Bergin's fourth goal of the season.

The Engineers took a 2-0 lead on a great individual effort by junior Bryan Brutlag (Lakeville, MN/Academy of Holy Angels). Taking in a pass from senior Peter Merth (New Westminster, BC/Burnaby Express) at the right circle, Brutlag stick-handled towards goal and backhanded home his sixth of the year.

Clarkson pulled to within a goal (2-1), when the puck popped out to the right point for sophomore Corey Tamblyn (Bobcaygeon, ON/Markham Waxers), who's shot along the ice found its way inside the far post. Assists went to classmates Nick Tremblay (Candiac, PQ/Smiths Falls Bears) and Mark Borowiecki (Kanata, ON/Smiths Falls Bears).

The Golden Knights lifted Karpowich for an extra attacker with just over a minute to play in the third, but could not get a shot through the traffic in front of the RPI cage as the Engineers held on for the win. Rensselaer finished the game 1 for 5 on the power-play, while Clarkson ended up 0 for 7.

The Engineers are back on the nice next weekend, when they travel to Dartmouth and Harvard on Friday (7pm) and Saturday (7pm), respectively. Clarkson returns home to host Princeton and Quinnipiac.
