TROY, N.Y. – Sophomore Casey Capello recorded a game-high 24 points, providing the difference, as the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team defeated Rensselaer, 62-38, this afternoon at East Campus Arena. With the win the Saints improve to 14-6 overall (6-4 Liberty League), while the Engineers fall to 12-8 (7-2 Liberty League).

Capello scored 13 of her 24 points in the second half, as St. Lawrence turned a 31-20 halftime lead in a 27 point advantage with 7:04 remaining in the game. Sophomore Katherine Edgerton (Shelburne, VT/Champlain Valley Union) also finished with double-digits, scoring 15 points on 4 of 10 shooting.

The Engineers fought to within 20 points on a three-pointer by junior Allison Connor (Hudson, NY/Hudson), but free throws from Edgerton put St. Lawrence back up 25 with 1:37 to play.

The Saints jumped out to an early lead, scoring the first 10 points of the game, while not allowing an RPI basket until sophomore Nicole Monroe (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) hit an 18-footer at the 13:41 mark of the first half.

Baskets by sophomore Hillary McKinley (Quinebaug, CT/Tourtellotte Regional) and graduate student Whitney Coleman (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Etiwanda) brought the Engineers to within four (10-6), but that was as close as they would get the rest of the way.

McKinley and Connor recorded back-to-back buckets with under a minute left in the opening half, but Capello nailed a long three as the horn sounded to end the first.

Connor finished with a team-high 11 points on 4 of 14 shooting, while McKinley ended up with seven points and eight rebounds. Coleman had six points, nine boards, two assists a block and a steal.

The Engineers return to action next weekend when they visit area-rivals Skidmore (6pm) and Union (2pm), respectively.
