POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Rensselaer men's lacrosse team battled back from an early deficit and went on to defeat Vassar, 6-3, in the Liberty League opener for both teams. The #19 Engineers remain undefeated on the season, improving to 6-0 overall. The Brewers are now 3-4.
Vassar got things going early as sophomore Jack Gross (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth) scored just 34 seconds into the first quarter. Junior Sam Seymour (Winchester, MA/Winchester) made it a two-goal advantage with 3:49 remaining, but the Engineers rallied back 48 seconds later as junior
Nick Billy (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) scored the first of three straight RPI goals.
Classmate
Conor Chocheles (Babylon, NY/Babylon), who assisted on Billy's goal, scored each of the next two goals to give the Engineers a 3-2 lead at the end of the first stanza.
Seymour knotted the game at 3-all in the second quarter, scoring at 4:46, but Billy pulled Rensselaer ahead once again with a tally at the 39 second mark.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the third quarter, but the Engineers carried the momentum from the second stanza into the final frame as senior
Devin Arnold (Buffalo, NY/Canisus) and freshman
Wes Rudy (Doylestown, PA/The Hill School) each scored to make it a 6-3 advantage and wrap up the game's scoring.
In goal, RPI freshman
James Manchester (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) improved his personal record to 6-0, stopping six shots in the win. For Vassar, junior Alex Tice (Oakland, CA/St. Ignatius Prep) shouldered the loss with nine saves.
Rensselaer is back in action on Saturday at Montclair State (2pm), while the Brewers are also in action on Saturday, hosting Richard Stockton (3:30pm).
