TROY, N.Y. - Brown University scored two goals in 1:13 early in the third period and sophomore goaltender Mike Clemente stopped 24 of 25 shots as the Bears defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 3-1, in the first game of the best-of-three ECAC Hockey Playoffs at the Houston Field House.
Brown improves to 9-17-4 and has the opportunity to close out the series on Saturday night. Game time at the Field House is 7pm. Rensselaer falls to 17-16-4.
Trailing 1-0 to open the third period, the Bears took the lead with two goals in the first 2:53 of the frame. The tying goal came off a scramble in front of RPI goaltender
Allen York (Wetaskiwin, AB/Camrose Kodiaks) when Jarred Smith (Pepper Pike, OH) slipped the puck over the goal line at the 1:40 mark. Just 1:13 later, the Bears took advantage of an errant clearing attempt by York to gain the lead. Sophomore Bobby Farnham (North Andover, MA) got the goal with assists to linemates Devin Timberlake (Port Alberni, BC) and Aaron Volpatti (Revelstoke, BC). Volpatti added an empty net goal at 18:55 for the final margin. Timberlake and Farnham tallied the assists.
RPI took a 1-0 lead at the 7:57 mark of the first period when senior
Paul Kerins (Weston, ON/North York Rangers) buried his own rebound with the Engineers on the power play. Junior
Chase Polacek (Edina, MN/Academy of Holy Angels) started the play with a pass from the right wing boards to defenseman
Mike Bergin (Ottawa, ON/Smiths Falls Bears) at the center of the blue line. Bergin's shot was blocked to Kerins, who was just outside the crease. Clemente (Great Falls, VA) made the initial save but the puck went right back to Kerins, who tallied his 13th of the season.
York finished with 25 saves for the Engineers, who were 1 for 5 on the power play. Brown was 0 for 3 with the man advantage.
