CLINTON, N.Y. - Sophomore attack
Andrew Miller had three goals and an assist to lead the Rensselaer men's lacrosse team to an 11-5 win at previously unbeaten Hamilton in a Liberty League showdown. RPI, the 19th-ranked team in the nation, is now 8-1 overall and 3-0 in the league. The Continentals fall to 6-1 and 0-1.
The contest was close throughout the first half with RPI holding a 5-4 lead at the break. The Engineers came out in the third quarter and outscored their hosts 4-1- including three goals in a two-minute span - to take a 9-5 advantage. Rensselaer then won the fourth quarter, 2-0, for the final margin.
The Engineers opened the game with the first three goals, including two from attack
Nick Billy (Redding, CT / Joel Barlow), but the Continentals evened the score with three straight goals of their own. Miller's (New Hartford, NY / New Hartford) first goal of the game late in the second quarter put RPI ahead by one at halftime.
Four different players, including Miller and senior
Bryant Johnson (Minnetonka, MN / The Blake School), tallied for RPI in the third quarter before Hamilton got back on the board. Johnson and Miller, who also had four ground balls, accounted for the Engineers' fourth quarter goals.
Freshman
James Manchester (Niskayuna, NY / Niskayuna) made 11 saves for the win for RPI, while two Hamilton goalies combined for five stops. Hamilton was led offensively by Paul Armideo, who had two goals and an assist.
