Engineers to Host U.S. National Junior Team

Men's hockey team to play defending gold medalists on December 19

Complete Schedule

TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team has added the U.S. National Junior Team to its 2010-11 schedule. The Engineers host Team USA – the defending World Junior Championship gold medalists – at the Houston Field House on Sunday, December 19, at 4pm.

“We are thrilled to be able to host Team USA as it prepares to defend its World Junior gold medal,” said Rensselaer head coach Seth Appert. “This will be an exciting opportunity for our student-athletes and fans as we play against the best under-20 year-old team in the world.”

The game is an exhibition as the U.S. National Team prepares for the 2011 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship, which will be held in Buffalo from December 26 to January 5.

Among those under consideration for a spot on the U.S. National Junior Team is Rensselaer forward Jerry D'Amigo. The Binghamton, N.Y., native, who will be a sophomore, participated in the 2010 World Junior Championship, tallying six goals and six assists for 12 points. He was first on the team in goals and third in assists.

For RPI, D'Amigo played in 35 games, tallying 10 goals and 24 assists for 34 points. He was third on the team in points, second in assists and fourth in goals. He was the 2010 ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Year and a Freshman All-America by Inside College Hockey.com.

Including D'Amigo, the 2010-11 Engineers return 21 players, featuring 15 forwards, three defensemen and three goaltenders. Among them are the top three scorers, including forward Chase Polacek, who led the team with 52 points (26 goals, 26 assists) and was recognized as the ECAC Hockey Player of the Year, a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award and a National All-America last season as a junior. Two others – goaltender Allen York and forward Brandon Pirri – also captured All-League recognition.
