Women's Hoops Falls to William Smith, 67-60

Allison Connor scores 19, but Engineers drop league game to Herons

TROY, N.Y. – Senior Allison Connor netted a team-high 19 points, but it wasn't enough as the William Smith women's basketball team defeated Rensselaer, 67-60, at East Campus Arena. With the win, the Herons improve to 8-8 overall and 3-2 Liberty League play. The Engineers drop to 7-9 (3-2 Liberty League).

Connor (Hudson, NY/Hudson), who hit 5 of 12 three-pointers, also collected three rebounds and an assist. Junior Kristen Kush (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley) paced the visitors with a game-best 26 points on 13 of 23 shooting from the field. She also had six rebounds, an assist and a blocked shot.

The Herons scored the first 10 points of the game - including the first eight by freshman Erin O'Brien (Buffalo, NY/Nardin Academy) - before three minutes had run off the clock. Baskets by Kush and senior Mollie Danahy (Troy, NY/Troy), pushed the William Smith lead to 18-5 with 15:12 to play in the first half.

The Engineers battled back to pull to within 22-17 on a three-pointer by Connor with 8:04 to go in the stanza. A three by Heron's sophomore Sydni Salvatore (Walpole, MA/Walpole) pushed the visitor's lead back to nine (27-18), before the Engineers rattled off seven straight points, making it a two-point game (27-25).

Two free-throws from freshman Liz Douglass (Rutland, VT/Rutland) extended the William Smith advantage to 31-25 with 1:14 left in the first, but RPI ended the half on a 7-2 run to make it 33-32 at the break.

Junior Lauren Hayes (Rensselaer, NY/Columbia) hit a three-pointer 37 seconds into the second half, which tied the game at 35-35, but Kush answered with a lay-up at the other end and the Herons never trailed the rest of the way.

Danahy finished with 15 points, five rebounds and an assist, while O'Brien added 13 points, six boards, two assist and a block. RPI junior Hillary McKinley (Quinebaug, CT/Tourtellotte Memorial) earned a double-double of the bench, recording 11 points and 12 rebounds. She also had two blocks and two steals.

Rensselaer is back in action next weekend, when it visits Union on Skidmore on Friday (6pm) and Saturday (2pm). William Smith hosts St. Lawrence and Clarkson on Friday (6pm) and Saturday (2pm).
