TROY, N.Y. – Senior
Chase Polacek notched a goal and two assists to lead the Rensselaer men's hockey team to a 5-3 victory over St. Lawrence, at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Engineers improve to 12-5-3 overall and 4-4-0 in ECAC Hockey play. The Saints fall to 6-10-3 (3-6-0 ECAC Hockey).
St. Lawrence jumped out to an early lead, scoring the game's first goal just 43 seconds in. Greg Carey (Hamilton, ON) picked out the top right corner from a near impossible angle along the goal line. Kyle Flanagan (Canton, NY) earned the lone assist.
The hosts pulled even (1-1) at 10:52 of the first, when freshman
Johnny Rogic (North Vancouver, BC/Alberni Valley Bulldogs) wristed one home from the middle of the slot. Polacek (Edina, MN/Academy of Holy Angels) pushed the puck ahead to Rogic, who netted his second of the year.
Rensselaer pulled ahead, 2-1, on a blast from the right point by senior
Jeff Foss (Moorhead, MN/Moorhead High School). Receiving a pass from Polacek, Foss's shot found the top left corner of the net for his first of the season at 19:17 of the opening frame.
The Saints drew even at 2-2, four minutes into the second period as George Hughes (Westwood, MA) converted a 5-on-3 power play opportunity when his low shot found its way through a screen and past RPI junior netminder
Allen York (Wetaskiwin, AB/Camrose Kodiaks). Justin Baker (Toronto, ON) was credited with the lone helper.
RPI took advantage of a 5-on-3 situation of their own at 8:31 of the second period, as junior
Patrick Cullen (Washington, DC/Indiana Ice) stuck in the rebound of a shot by sophomore
Nick Bailen (Fredonia, NY/Indiana Ice) that caromed off the crossbar. Senior
Tyler Helfrich (Calgary, AB/Prince George Spruce Kings) picked up the second assist on Cullen's go-ahead goal (3-2).
Sophomore
Greg Burgdoerfer (East Setauket, NY/Air Force Academy) gave the hosts a brief 4-2 lead, when he hammered a slap shot from the top of the left circle past St. Lawrence freshman goaltender Matt Weninger (Lethbridge, AB) at 12:45 of the second.
St. Lawrence quickly pulled back to within a goal (4-3) as Carey notched his second of the game at 13:22 of the stanza. Flanagan threaded a pass up the center of the slot for Carey to tap in, just inside the left post.
Polacek netted an insurance goal – the only tally of the third period – at 14:40 of the frame to cap his three-point night. Assists went to junior
Mike Bergin (Ottawa, ON/Smiths Falls Bears) and sophomore CJ Lee (Staten Island, NY/Green Bay Gamblers).
York (11-5-3) finished with 22 saves in the contest, including all four shots he faced in the third period. Weninger made 19 stops at the other end of the ice.
The Engineers are back in action next Friday and Saturday, when they visit Cornell (7pm) and Colgate (7pm). St. Lawrence visits Michigan Tech for a pair of non-league contests on Friday (7pm) and Saturday (5:05pm).
