TROY, N.Y. – Sophomore Daniel Carr recorded a four-point game, including a hat-trick, to lead the 13th-ranked Union men's hockey team to a, 5-1, victory over Rensselaer, in ECAC Hockey play at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Dutchmen improve to 6-3-3 overall (3-2-0 ECACH), while the Engineers fall to 2-10-0 (1-4-0 ECACH).

Junior Nick Bailen (Fredonia, NY/Indiana Ice) netted the game's first goal on the power-play at 5:34 of the opening stanza. Freshman Ryan Haggerty (Stamford, CT/U.S. National Dev. Team) sent a cross-ice pass to classmate Jacob Laliberte (Rockland, ON/Cornwall Colts) in right circle. Laliberte left the puck at the top of the circle for Bailen who ripped a shot into the top left corner of the net.

The Dutchmen answered less than three minutes later on senior Kelly Zajac's (Winnipeg, MB/Salmon Arm Silverbacks) third of the season. Carr carried the puck up the left wing before centering a pass for Zajac, who buried a shot into an open net. Junior Wayne Simpson (Boxborough, MA/Lawrence Academy) earned the second assist.

Carr then put Union up for good at 12:49 of the first period, when he picked up the rebound of a Josh Jooris (Burlington, ON/Burlington Cougars) wrap-around attempt and slammed in his second of the contest. Sophomore Mat Bodie (East St. Paul, MB/Powell River Kings) earned the second helper on the power-play marker.

Dutchmen junior Jeremy Welsh (Bayfield, ON/Oakville Blades) extended the visitors lead to 3-1 at 5:29 of the second frame, with assists to freshmen Shayne Gostisbehere (Margate, FL/South Kent School) and Max Novak (Oak Ridge, NJ/New Jersey Hitmen).

Carr notched his second goal of the contest at 9:13 of the second on a man-advantage tally from Bodie and Jooris. Union added an empty-net goal – the only goal of the third period – at 17:45 of the frame, as Carr completed his hat-trick on a shot from center ice.

Sophomore goaltender Troy Grosenick (Brookfield, WI/Cedar Rapid Rough Riders) made 21 save to earn the victory for the Dutchmen, while RPI junior Bryce Merriam (Bethel Park, MD/Topeka RoadRunners) stopped 25 of the 29 shots he faced at the other end of the ice.

The Engineers are idle this weekend, but return to the ice on November 25, when they visit RIT for a non-league contest (7:05pm). Union is back in action on November 25, when they visit Michigan (3:05pm).
