POTSDAM, N.Y. – Senior Corey Tamblyn netted a pair of goals to lead the Clarkson University men's hockey team to a 4-1 victory over Rensselaer, in the ECAC Hockey opener for both schools, at Cheel Arena. With the win, the Golden Knights improve to 6-1-2 overall (1-0-0 ECACH), while the Engineers drop to 1-7-0 (0-1-0 ECACH).

Rensselaer freshman Ryan Haggerty (Stamford, CT/U.S. National Dev. Team) got the visitors on the scoreboard first, netting his first collegiate goal – a power-play tally at 18:06 of the first period. Haggerty tipped a shot by senior captain Mike Bergin (Ottawa, ON/Smiths Falls Bears) past Clarkson senior netminder Paul Karpowich (Thunder Bay, ON/Wellington Dukes). Junior Nick Bailen (Fredonia, NY/Indiana Ice) earned the second assist.

The Golden Knights tied it up with just nine seconds left in the opening frame, on Tamblyn's (Bobcaygeon, ON/Markham Waxers) first goal of the contest. Picking up a loose puck in front of the RPI cage, he whipped a shot past Engineers' junior goalie Bryce Merriam (Bethel Park, PA/Topeka RoadRunners) from close range. Helpers went to sophomore Alex Boak (Norwood, NY/Brockville Braves) and senior Jake Morley (Odgensburg, NY/Northwood).

Senior Louke Oakley (Whitby, ON/St. Michael's Buzzers) then notched the eventual game-winning tally at 8:43 of the second – the only goal scored in the stanza. Oakley's team-leading sixth of the year was assisted by sophomore Matt Zarbo (Grand Island, NY/Sioux Falls Stampede) and senior Julien Cayer (Longueuil, PQ/Northwood).

Tambyn then added an insurance goal at 14:05 of the third on the power-play. A shot from the right point by Oakley was redirected through the legs of Merriam by Tamblyn for his second of the game and fourth of the season. Clarkson senior Nick Tremblay (Candiac, PQ/Smiths Falls Bears) tacked on an empty netter at 17:02 to cap the scoring.

Karpowich (6-1-2) earned the victory, making 20 saves, while Merriam finished with 28 stops at the other end of the ice. The Engineers went 1 for 3 on the man-advantage, while Clarkson ended up 1 for 6.

The Engineers are back in action tomorrow night, when they travel to Canton, N.Y., to face St. Lawrence (7pm). The Golden Knights host #13 Union tomorrow night (7pm).
