BENNINGTON, Vt. - The RPI Engineers used 59 second half points to defeat the St. Joseph's Saints 107-90 on Saturday afternoon. The win gave the Engineers their second Tri State Shootout championship in the last three years, and improved their record to 3-3 overall. The loss was only the second of the season for the Saints as they dropped to 7-2.
The Saints used a hot start in the first half and jumped out to an early 19-4 lead. The Engineers refused to go away however, and were able to overcome some poor shooting to cut the deficit to nine at half time as the Saints led 57-48.
After shooting 32% in the first half, the Engineers started to make shots and cut into the Saints lead. The Engineers started the second half on an 11-1 run and were able to tie the game at 58-58; when
Nate Fiala made a layup with 17:26 to play. The tie was the first since the game's opening tip off.
The teams traded baskets until the tournament's MVP Redon Quello hit two free throws to give the Engineers a 68-66 lead with 13:36 to play. From there the Engineers never lost the lead and closed the game out with 27-10 run to win by a final score of 107-90.
Jamie Zajac led the Engineers with 18 points behind 6-8 shooting.
Brendan Farley chipped in 15 points behind 5-9 shooting from beyond the arc. Brendan Rios led the way for the Saints with 19 points on 7-15 shooting. Rahiem Smalls also added 17 points for the Saints.
RPI will be in action next on January 2nd when they travel to Hoboken, NJ to play Stevens Institute of Technology. The Saints play Clarkson next on December 6th.
