After killing off a five-minute major penalty that had carried over into the overtime frame, the Big Red capitalized on a power-play of its own. Senior Tyler Roeszler (Chatham, ON/Chatham Maroons) found classmate Mike Devin at the left point, who then ripped a shot that was tipped by Joe Devin (Scituate, MA/Nanaimo) past RPI sophomore netminder
Bryce Merriam (Bethel Park, PA/Topeka RoadRunners), for the win.
Cornell jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 6:50 of the first period on a wrist shot from the right faceoff circle by sophomore llowick, OH/Westside Warriors). John Esposito (Montreal, PQ/Notre Dame Hounds) earned the lone assist when he intercepted an RPI pass at the defensive blue line and connected with a streaking Mihalek.
RPI tied the score just 2:34 later when senior
Chase Polacek (Edina, MN/Academy of Holy Angels) scored a power play goal on a rush. Sophomore
Nick Bailen (Fredonia, NY/Indiana Ice) dropped the puck to Polacek at center ice and he skated through the defense and wristed a shot into the net for his 18th goal of the season.
The Big Red got the lead back on a play similar to its first goal, this time with Sean Whitney (Scituate, MA/Cushing Academy) connecting with Sean Collins (Saskatoon, SK/Waywayseecappo Wolverines), who scored from the left faceoff circle at the 10:15 mark.
Rensselaer pulled even once again, this time on a break-away finish by junior
Alex Angers-Goulet, 4:41 into the second period. Senior captain
John Kennedy (Saginaw, MI/St. Louis Bandits) chipped the puck up the right-wing boards to junior
Justin Smith (Hammonds Plains, NS/Langley Chiefs), who tipped the puck ahead to an on-rushing Angers-Goulet, who beat Cornell freshman goaltender Andy Iles (Ithaca, NY/US National Under-20 Team) for the goal.
Iles (7-4-2) made 30 saves to earn the win, while Merriam (2-2-1) made 20 stops at the other end of the ice.
The Engineers return to action next weekend, when they visit North Country-rivals St. Lawrence and Clarkson on Friday (7pm) and Saturday (7pm), respectively.
