Box Score

CANTON, N.Y. – Freshman Greg Carey scored two goals, including one on the power-play, to lead the St. Lawrence men's hockey team to a, 5-3, victory over Rensselaer, at Appleton Arena. With the win, the Saints improve to 10-16-5 overall and 5-12-1 in ECAC Hockey play, while the Engineers fall to 18-9-4 and 10-8-1 in the conference.

Rensselaer, which currently sits in sixth place in the ECAC Hockey standings, can move up to as high as fourth with a win at Clarkson tomorrow night (7pm) and losses by Cornell (vs. Dartmouth) and Princeton (vs. Yale), tomorrow and Sunday, respectively. RPI can finish the regular season no lower than eighth and no higher than third.

With the score tied 1-1, Carey (Hamilton, ON) gave the hosts the lead for good at 6:35 of the first period. Just four seconds into a power-play, he beat RPI junior netminder Allen York (Wetaskiwin, AB/Camrose Kodiaks) to the top right corner of the net. Assists went to senior Aaron Bogosian (Messina, NY) and graduate student Sean Flanagan (Canton, NY).

Carey gave St. Lawrence a two-goal lead (3-1) at 5:27 of the second, when he rifled a shot from the top of the left circle past York. Freshman defenseman Justin Baker (Toronto, ON) and classmate Jeremy Wick (Grand Valley, ON) earned the helpers on Carey's second of the game and 17th of the season.

The Saints extended their lead to 4-1 at 13:17 of the frame, on a rebound goal by senior captain Jared Keller (Wikie, SA). After shots by senior Nick Pitsikoulis (Montreal, PQ) and junior Jared Drewiske (Hudson, WI) were turned away by York, Keller found himself with the puck and a wide-open net, burying his second of the year.

RPI senior defenseman Jeff Foss (Moorhead, MN/Moorhead) brought the visitors to within two (4-2), when he slipped a shot, from the right face-off dot, through the legs of St. Lawrence sophomore goaltender Robby Moss (Chesterfield, MO) at 4:51 of the third.

St. Lawrence answered 59 seconds later (5:50) on a tight-angle marker by sophomore Jordan Dewey (Chateauguay, PQ). Fanning on his initial attempt in near the bottom of the left circle, he regained control of the puck wristed it past York, short side for his second goal of the season. Assists went to Keller and Drewiske.

Sophomore CJ Lee (Staten Island, NY/Green Bay Gamblers) brought the Engineers back to within two goals once again (5-3), when he stuffed one in from the side of the net at 15:49 of the final period. Lee dug out a rebound of an Alex Angers-Goulet (St. Augustin, PQ/Langley Chiefs) out from the side the net to notch his fifth of the year.  Senior Bryan Brutlag (Lakeville, MN/Academy of Holy Angels) also had an assist on the goal.

The Saints dominated the opening moments of the first period and turned it into the game's first goal as Flanagan netted his fourth goal from Bogosian and Dewey at 1:24. RPI junior Josh Rabbani (Woodland Hills, CA/St. Louis Bandits) answered with a power-play tally at 4:48 of the frame, with sophomore Nick Bailen (Fredonia, NY/Indiana Ice) and senior Tyler Helfrich (Calgary, AB/Prince George Spruce Kings) earning the assists.

Moss (5-4-2) made 21 saves to earn the victory, while York (16-7-3) stopped 24 shots before being relieved by sophomore Bryce Merriam (Bethel Park, PA/Topeka RoadRunners) midway through the third. Merriam turned away all seven shots he faced in 11:45 of ice time.
