GENEVA, N.Y.—The Skidmore College men's basketball team had four player reach double figures in scoring and earned a 76-69 win over Rensselaer in a Liberty League semifinal game played in Bristol Gym tonight. The No. 3 seed Thoroughbreds improve to 17-9 overall, while the Engineers conclude their season with a 17-8 mark.
Skidmore will play the winner of the Hobart-Hamilton semifinal game. The championship will be in Bristol Gym tomorrow, Feb. 26 at 3 p.m.
Terron Victoria led the Thoroughbreds with a game-high 17 points. He was 7-of-10 from the floor and 3-of-7 from behind the arc. Gerard O'Shea contributed 12 points, five rebounds, and three steals. Kyle Clark and Melvis Langyintuo each contributed 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Clark also dished out a game-high four assists.
Travis Jones led Rensselaer with 13 points and eight rebounds.
Andrew Darst chipped in 11 points and four rebounds.
Matthew Pooley also reached double figures in scoring with 10 and grabbed three boards.
Skidmore shot 40.3 percent from the floor and made 7-of-25 from behind the arc. The Thoroughbreds made 19-of-24 free throw attempts. They held the Engineers to 37.3 percent shooting and 20 percent from the three. Rensselaer made all 22 of their free throws. Skidmore held a 39-38 edge in rebounds.
Rensselaer jumped out to a 13 point lead at 10:53 in the first half after layup and free throw by
Joe Gibbons. Skidmore answered going on a 15-0 run to take a three point lead. The run started off with two threes by Victoria and was capped with two free throws by Brian Lowry. Gibbons hit a jumper with 10 seconds left in the half to give Rensselaer a 38-34 lead going into the break.
Skidmore's Victoria hit a layup and followed with a 3-pointer to take back the lead in the opening minutes of the second half. The Engineers were able to tie the game at 46 at 13:29 when
Andrew Darst made two free throws, however that is as close as Rensselaer would get. The Thoroughbreds stretched their lead to as many as eight three different times in the second half. The Engineers got within five after a layup by
Jeremy Bull with 19 seconds remaining, but Skidmore made four foul shots to lead by nine with 10 seconds left. Pooley made two free throws with five seconds on the clock for the final.
