The Fighting Sioux took an early lead when senior Brad Malone got behind the defense and slid the puck under Rensselaer netminder
Allen York at 5:25 of the first period. The goal, which was set up by Evan Trupp and Matt Frattin, was the 14th of the season for Malone.
The second period scoring was started by Malone, who got his 15th when he scored on a rebound of a Trupp shot at 3:58 with the Fighting Sioux on the power play. Corban Knight also earned an assist on the goal. Sophomore Danny Kristo made it a 3-0 lead for North Dakota when he made a nifty move in the offensive zone and wristed a shot over the glove hand of York. Kristo's goal, his eighth of the year, came at the 8:03 mark.
Junior Jason Gregoire put the Fighting Sioux ahead 4-0 when he scored the second power play goal of the game. After a Chay Genoway shot hit the crossbar, the puck caromed to Gregoire, who scored his 25th goal of the season from to bottom of the right faceoff circle. Kristo also had a helper on the play. Knight made it 5-0 at 17:17 when he collected the puck in the near corner, carried it into the slot and scored shorthanded from just outside the crease.
Frattin, a candidate for the Hobey Baker Award, scored just 32 seconds into the third period for a 6-0 lead. Trupp earned his third assist of the game on the goal, Frattin's nation's-best 36th of the season.
