TROY, N.Y. – Senior Francois Brisebois and junior Nick Prockow each netted two goals to lead the Colgate men's hockey team to a, 5-2, victory over Rensselaer, this evening, in front of 2,635 at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Raiders improve to 8-25-3 and force a series-deciding game 3, while the Engineers drop to 20-11-5 on the year.
RPI senior
Chase Polacek (Edina, MN/Academy of Holy Angels) recorded a pair of special teams goals to keep the hosts in the contest through two periods, but a pair of empty net tallies in the closing minutes of the third sealed the win for Colgate.
The Raiders got the scoring started at 1:51 of the opening frame, when Prockow stole the puck behind the RPI cage and beat Engineers' junior goaltender
Allen York (Wetaskiwin, AB/Camrose Kodiaks) to the right pipe. The goal, which was unassisted, was Prockow's fifth of the season.
Polacek evened the score (1-1) after taking a feed from sophomore CJ Lee (Staten Island, NY/Green Bay Gamblers) and making a move past Colgate freshman netminder Eric Mihalik (Avon Lake, OH/Des Moines) for his second shorthanded tally of the season, at 5:56 of the second period.
Brisebois put the visitors back on top for good at 9:16 of the period, burying a rebound into an open net after a shot by senior defenseman Wade Poplawski (Winnipeg, MB/Winnipeg) deflected off the crossbar.
Colgate freshman Chris Wagner (Walpole, MA/South Shore Kings) scored the Raiders' third goal on a pass from senior Austin Mayer (Providence, RI/Providence). Sophomore Robbie Bourdon (Montreal, PQ/Taft School) earned the second assist on Wagner's seventh of the year, which came at 16:49 of the second stanza.
The Engineers pulled to within one (3-2), when Polacek netted his second of the game, on the power-play, at 18:56 of the second. Senior
Tyler Helfrich (Calgary, AB/Prince George Spruce Kings) sent the puck to sophomore
Nick Bailen (Fredonia, NY/Indiana Ice), who found Polacek for the one-timer finish from just inside the right circle.
RPI produced 10 shots in the third period, but couldn't get one past Mihalik (5-12-2), who finished with 29 saves on the evening. Prockow and Brisebois notched empty net goals at 18:49 and 19:57 of the third, respectively.
York (18-9-4) finished with 25 stops, including 10 in the third period, before being pulled for an extra attacker with 1:24 to play.
Game three of the series is set for tomorrow night at the Houston Field House (7pm), with the winner advancing to the quarterfinal round.
