#10 Men's Lacrosse Beaten in Overtime by #7 RIT, 10-9

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Rensselaer scored three third period goals, including one with just 48 seconds remaining, to force overtime but the #10 Engineers allowed an extra session tally at 1:44 and lost at #7 RIT, 10-9.  Conor Chocheles scored three times for RPI and Devin Arnold once to tie the score at 9-9 but RPI falls to 1-1.  RIT is now 2-0. 

The homestanding Tigers earned the victory when junior attack Tyler Russell (Livonia, NY/Livonia) scored with 1:44 remaining in overtime. Russell took a feed from senior Iric Bressler (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) and ripped a shot low to high that beat RPI goalie James Manchester (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna).

Russell led RIT with a career-high four goals. Senior midfielder Jordan MacIntosh (Oakville, ON/Holy Trinity) had two goals and Tanner King (Virginia Beach, VA/Corning East), Jordan Collins-Hartwig (Buffalo, NY/Clarence) and Kyle Aquin (Hamilton, Ontario/St. Jean De Brebeuf) each had a goal. Bressler finished with three assists.

Senior midfielder Conor Chocheles (Babylon, NY/Babylon) led the Engineers with three goals. Junior Andrew Liptak (Westfield, MA/Westfield) had a goal and two assists and classmate Chris O'Neil (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) had two assists.

RPI opened the game with three straight goals, taking a 3-0 lead on a Grant Foulsham (Madison, NJ/Madison) goal with 4:37 left in the first quarter.  The Tigers answered back with :52 remaining on a MacIntosh man-up goal on an assist from Collins-Hartwig.

That started a string of six straight goals for the Tigers late in the first quarter and into the second quarter. King gave RIT its largest lead of the game of three goals with 4:46 remaining in the half.  The Engineers closed out the half with two straight goals, making it 6-5 at the half.

That score stayed until 3:53 remaining in the third quarter when MacIntosh scored an unassisted goal to give the Tigers a 7-5 lead.  Collins-Hartwig made it 8-5 with his lone tally of the day with 2:12 to play in the third, matching the TIgers largest lead of the game.

Rensselaer's Chocheles scored with three seconds to play in the third quarter to pull the Engineers within two goals at 8-6.

RPI took the momentum into the fourth quarter, scoring two straight goals, tying the score on a Max Blair (West Orange, NJ/Seton Hall Prep.) goal with 12:42 remaining in regulation.

Russell scored his third goal of the game with 6:10 remaining to break the tie and give the Tigers a 9-8 lead.

With less than a minute remaining, RPI's Tyler Hutchinson (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) forced RIT's Kelso Daivs into a turnover inside the RIT zone. That led to Devin Arnold's (Buffalo, NY/Canisius) game-tying goal with 48 seconds remaining in regulation.

Each team had their share of chances in the overtime. Bob Tonnessen (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield), who finished with 14 saves, including eight in the forurth quarter, came up big for the Tigers in the overtime.

Off a timeout, Bressler spotted an open Russell and fired a pass right on his stick. Russell gatherd and fired a shot that beat Manchester.

The Tigers outshot RPI 43-30 and won the ground ball battle 34-28. RIT was 9-of-23 on faceoffs and were 21-of-26 on clearing attemtps. Rensselaer was 19-of-26 on clears.

RPI is in action again on Monday afternoon when it hosts Castleton State at 4pm at East Campus Stadium.  The game was originally schedule to be played at Castleton but was moved to Troy.  RIT returns to action on March 19 when it travels to face Clarkson at 1 pm.
