MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - Despite a game-best four goals from senior Devin Arnold, the Rensselaer men's lacrosse team was not able to overcome a 6-2 scoring margin in the second half as Middlebury held on for a 13-9 victory on Tuesday at Alumni Stadium.  With the win, the 10th-ranked Panthers improve to 9-2 on the season, while the Engineers slip to 8-5 overall.

Locked in a 7-7 tie after the first half of action, Middlebury carried its momentum over from the second quarter with four straight goals.  Tim Cahill and David Hild led the way as Cahill tallied nearing the end of the second stanza and a the 8:31 mark of the third quarter, while Hild notched both in the third frame.

Arnold attempted to pull the Engineers back into the contest in the final quarter, scoring at 14:10 of the stanza, but the Panthers answered as Andrew Conner fired a shot by netminder James Manchester at 9:47 to regain the four-goal advantage (12-8).

RPI junior Andrew Miller, who had three tallies in the game, cut the deficit to three once more with a shot past Panthers goalie Ryan Deane, but Cahill responded with 4:34 left on the clock to seal the victory.

For Middlebury, Cahill, Conner and Hild all finished with three goals, while Conner added an assist.  Between the pipes, Deane stopped 13 shots for the win.

In addition to Arnold's four tallies for the visiting Engineers, Miller had three goals, while rookie Mike Hicks added a goal and an assist.  Manchester made 12 saves in the loss.

Rensselaer is back in action on Saturday, hosting St. Lawrence in a critical Liberty League contest at East Campus Stadium (1pm).  The Panthers are also in action on Saturday, hosting NESCAC rival Tufts (2pm).
