Patrick Cullen had a goal and two assists as Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) scored four goals in the second period and junior
Bryce Merriam stopped all 19 shots he faced as the Engineers defeated St. Lawrence University (SLU), 4-0, in ECAC Hockey action at Houston Field House.
The Engineers scored a season-high four times in the middle frame to win their third straight game and improve to 4-1-1 in their last six games. Overall they are 7-17-1 and 4-8-1 in the league. St. Lawrence falls to 8-14-3 and 4-8-1.
Merriam (Bethel Park, PA/Topeka RoadRunners), the ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Week last week, earned his third shutout of the year and second in the past three games. In fact, he has allowed just one goal on 101 shots in the last three contests.
RPI had two goals within a 1:18 span and added a third only 3:26 later in the second period to take control. Cullen (Washington, DC/Indiana Ice) put the home team ahead when he scored under the crossbar from the slot at 6:42. Cullen, who was stationed in the slot, picked up a
Mark McGowan (Toronto, ON/Oakville Blades) rebound and tallied for the second time this season. Junior
Marty O'Grady (London, ON/Wellington Dukes), the reigning ECAC Hockey Player of the Week, doubled the lead with a power play goal from just off the left post at eight minutes even.
Matt Tinordi (Severna Park, MD/Olds Grizzlys) had the initial shot and picked up the primary assist, while Cullen earned the secondary helper.
C.J. Lee (Staten Island, NY/Green Bay Gamblers) added RPI's second power play goal of the night when he took a Cullen pass and wristed a shot into the top left corner of the net. O'Grady also had a hand in the goal for the Engineers. Defenseman
Bo Dolan (St. Paul, MN/Penticton Vees) added the Engineers' fourth goal on a snapshot from the top of the slot at 17:58.
Alex Angers-Goulet (St. Augustin, PQ/Langley Chiefs), who missed the last four games due to injury, and
Johnny Rogic (North Vancouver, BC/Alberni Valley Bulldogs) had the assists.
Robby Moss (Chesterfield, MO) took the loss for St. Lawrence, stopping 20 shots.
RPI is back at home on Saturday night at 7pm to face Clarkson University. SLU plays at Union College on Saturday at 7pm.
