Sarah Wetmore (Sudbury, Mass.) netted a game-high 23 points to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute women's basketball team past Lehman College, 69-30, Saturday afternoon in the opening round of the 2012 Emmanuel College Saints Invitational at the Jean Yawkey Center Gymnasium. With the win the Engineers improve to 1-0 on the year while the loss drops the Lightning to 0-1.
In the opening frame, the Engineers used an intense full court press to create 19 turnovers which they would convert into 12 fast break points en route to a 35-18 halftime lead. Lehman looked good in the early goings on the half, taking a 4-2 lead following a layup by freshman guard Luisayra Madrigal (Bronx, N.Y.) but RPI would respond with an 8-0 run to take control of the action with a 10-4 advantage following a jumper by sophomore guard
Amanda Lynch (Middletown, N.Y.).
After a Lightning bucket by junior guard Jasmin Castro-Lopez (Bronx, N.Y.) to make it 10-6, RPI would continue to build its first half lead with a 9-0 spurt capped by a layup from junior guard
Zysnia Osepa (Melrose, N.Y.) to put Rensselaer on top 19-6 with 13:11 left in the half.
A jumper by Wetmore made it a 44-20 game early in the second half and then with 9:35 remaining a three by Osepa made it 55-26 in favor of the Engineers. RIP would maintain control over the final nine minutes of play, ending the game on a 17-4 run to secure the 69-30 victory.
Along with her 23 points, Wetmore added a team-high nine rebounds in the win while sophomore guard
Jen Rock (Byfield, Mass.) chipped in with 16 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore guard
Bailei Tetrault (Cohoes, N.Y.) was also in double figures with 11 points.
For the Lightning, freshman forward Shalaya Nieves (Camden, Del.) led the team with seven points while junior center Stephanie Miranda (Bronx, N.Y.) posted six points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Both teams will return to action tomorrow as RPI will take on the winner of the Emmanuel/WNEU match-up in the Saints Invitational championship game scheduled for a 3:00 PM tip while Lehman will face the loser in the consolation game at 1:00 PM.
