Jamie Zajac tied a career-high with 28 points and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's basketball team defeated Berkeley College, 102-85, in a non-league men's basketball game at East Campus Arena. The Engineers improve to 2-2, while the Knights are also 2-2.
Zajac (Merrimack, NH / Bishop Guertin), a guard, made nine field goals, including 6 of 8 from three-point range, and four free throws to lead RPI. He tied his career-best of 28 points, which he set on February 17, 2012, at Skidmore College. In today's game, he also had two assists and four steals in 16 minutes of action.
As a team, the Engineers made 33 of 100 shots, including 16 of 56 three-point field goal attempts. They scored 40 points off 33 Berkeley turnovers. RPI, which led by as many as 18 points midway through the second half, finished with 22 steals and 17 assists in the game. Defensively, Rensselaer held the Knights to 1 of 14 shooting from three-point range.
Berkley's Kaseem Williams (Brooklyn, NY / Boys & Girls), a senior guard, paced the visitors with 28 points of his own. He connected on 10 of 21 shots (1 of 5 from 3-point range) and 7 of 10 free throws. He also had six rebounds, three assists and three steals in 36 minutes.
Jose Stable (Brooklyn, NY / EBC HS for Public Service) and Elijah Craig (Brooklyn, NY / Seward Park) both had double-doubles for the Knights. Stable, a senior forward, had 25 points and 16 rebounds, while Craig, a junior center, had 10 points and 11 rebounds. Stable also had six assists, while Craig chipped in with five blocks.
Three others joined Zajac in double figures for the Engineers.
Brendan Farley (Burlington, MA / Burlington) and
Nick Keefe (Rensselaer, NY / Columbia) both had 11 points and freshman
Brian Hatcher (Danbury, CT / Immaculate) added 10. Farley, a senior, also had four rebounds, four assists and three steals.
RPI returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Williams College at 8pm. Berkeley plays Sarah Lawrence next Sunday at 3pm.
