TROY, N.Y. - Cory Hibbeler had a goal and an assist and Eric Hartzell stopped 24 of 25 shots as Quinnipac University defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 3-1, in an ECAC Hockey game at Houston Field House. With the victory the Bobcats improve to 16-10-5 overall and 8-4-4 in the league. The Engineers fall to 8-20-3 and 5-11-3.
Rensselaer broke out to 1-0 lead when freshman
Zach Schroeder (Prior Lake, MN/Saint Thomas Academy) beat a pair of defensemen to a loose puck in the offensive zone and he snapped a shot past Hartzell (White Bear Lake, NY/Sioux Falls) at 9:10 of the first period.
Matt Tinordi (Severna Park, MD/Olds Grizzlys) had the lone helper on the play.
The Bobcats used just 23 seconds to tie the game when sophomore Reese Rolheiser (Edmonton, AB/Sherwood Park) scored on a long drive from above the left faceoff circle. Hibbeler (St. Charles, MO/Lincoln), who passed the puck across the ice to a Rolheiser, who was coming through the neutral zone, earned the only assist. The visitors grabbed the lead with only 15.1 seconds left in the second period on a power play goal from junior Zack Currie (Victoria, BC/Cowichan Valley). Matthew Peca (Petawawa, ON/Pembroke) and Loren Barron (Glendora, CA/Indiana) assisted on the goal, which came on a slap shot from a blocked shot.
Quinnipiac got the only goal of the second period when Hibbeler deflected a low Barron shot past RPI netminder
Bryce Merriam (Bethel Park, PA/Topeka RoadRunner) at 16:12 of the frame. The two teams skated to a scoreless third period for the final margin.
Hartzell finished with nine saves in the first period, eight in the second and seven in the third. Merriam stopped 24 of the 27 shots he faced in the contest for RPI, which was 0 for 5 on the power play. Quinnipiac finished 1 of 2 with the man-advantage.
The Engineers are right back at home on Saturday night when they host Princeton on Senior Appreciation Night. The Bobcats travel to Schenectady to face Union. Both games are ECAC Hockey contests and both begin at 7pm.
