JUPITER, Fla. – Freshman
Colin Fortuner scored the first three goals of his career to lead a balanced attack and the #17 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's lacrosse team defeated Centenary College, 13-3. Eleven different student-athletes had at least a point for the Engineers, who improved to 4-0. The Cyclones fall to 1-3.
A midfielder, Fortuner (Litchfield, CT / The Master's School) was one of three RPI players to register their first career goals. Attackmen
John Nolan (East Hampton, NY / East Hampton High School) and
Connor Sullivan (Bedford, NH / Bedford High School), both of whom are freshmen, were the others.
Rensselaer broke out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter and a 5-0 edge in the second before Centenary got on the board. The Engineers carried a 7-1 lead into halftime and made it a 9-1 game with just a quarter to play. RPI outscored the Cyclones by two (4-2) in the final period for the 10-goal victory.
In addition to Fortuner, others with multiple points for Rensselaer were senior attack
Andrew Miller (New Hartford, NY / New Hartford), who had two goals and an assist, senior midfielder
Andrew Liptak (Westfield, MA / Westfield), who had a pair of goals, and junior attack
David Hey (Chapel Hill, NC / Durham Academy), who notched a goal and an assist.
Junior
James Manchester (Niskayuna, NY / Niskayuna) earned the win by making four saves on five shots in the first 25 minutes. For Centenary, senior Kyle McVay (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick Twp.) had 15 saves in three quarters of action.
Offensively for the Cyclones, junior Conor Nolan (Hillsborough, N.J. / Immaculata) had a goal and an assist, while two others had single goals.
RPI returns to action on Saturday afternoon at Elmira (1pm). Centenary plays again on March 21 when it hosts Scranton at 3:30pm.
