TROY, N.Y. – 10 players netted goals, including junior
Brett Overend, who had a game-high four as the 16th-ranked Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's lacrosse team defeated Manhattanville College, 18-3, this afternoon, in non-league action from East Campus Stadium. With the win, the Engineers improve to 6-0 on the season, while the Valiants drop to 1-5.
RPI scored the game's first seven goals, including one just 11 seconds into the contest by senior
Brian Larkin (Florham Park, NJ/Seton Hall Prep). Less than 40 seconds later, classmate
Wes Rudy (Doylestown, PA/The Hill School) made it 2-0 Engineers.
Overend (Laguna Hills, CA/Laguna Hills) notched the first of his four goals 2:47 into the first quarter to make it a 3-0 game.
Rensselaer ran off four more goals in the first quarter before Manhattanville senior Joe Daly (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) got the visitors on the scoreboard with 3:53 to go in the first. Engineers' freshman
Colin Fortuner (Litchfield, CT/The Master's School) answered less than a minute later to make it 8-1.
A five-goal second quarter was highlighted by two from Overend, including a man-up tally. RPI held a 36-5 edge in shots after 30 minutes. The Engineers also won 11 of the first 15 face-offs.
After senior
Lachlan Murphy (Issaquah, WA/Skyline) made it 14-1 Rensselaer, the Valiants scored their second goal of the game as sophomore Brendan Kuntz (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) netted his third of the season.
RPI then scored three straight goals, including Murphy's second of the contest. Kuntz opened the fourth quarter by recording his second of the game, before Engineers' freshman
Aaron Shavel (Lawrenceville, NJ/Princeton Day School) capped the scoring.
Junior
James Manchester (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) earned the win in net, making one save. Manhattanville junior Dom Poletto (Engelwood, CO/Regis Jesuit) took the loss, stopping nine shots.
Rensselaer is back in action on Saturday at 1pm, when it hosts Vassar to open its Liberty League schedule.
