ONEONTA, N.Y. – Junior 
Eric Valero scored a team-high three goals, but the 15th-ranked Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's lacrosse team fell to Oneonta State, 10-8, this afternoon, in non-league action. With the win, the Red Dragons improve to 2-5 overall, while the Engineers drop to 7-1.
RPI, which trailed 8-3 in the third quarter, pulled to within 9-8 on Valero's (Princeton Junction, NJ/W. Winsor Plainsboro) third goal of the game and 11th of the season. The Red Dragons were able to add an insurance goal as Jim van de Veerdonk concluded the scoring with just over a minute to play.
After an even first quarter in which each team scored a pair of goals, Oneonta State put together a decisive second frame, outscoring the Engineers 4-1 for a 6-3 halftime advantage. John Deodio paced the hosts scoring five goals, while assisting on two more, while Tyler Jennings added two goals and an assist.
The Engineers scored three of the five third-quarter goals pull within 8-6, but the Red Dragons were able to hold on for the win.
Aiding Valero offensive for Rensselaer was freshman 
Aaron Shavel (Lawrenceville, NJ/Princeton Day School), who had a goal and assists. Senior 
Andrew Liptak (Westfield, MA/Westfield) netted a pair.
Oneonta State goaltender Chris Miles made nine saves to earn the win, while 
James Manchester (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) made 13 stops for the Engineers.
Rensselaer is back in action on Saturday, when it visits Liberty League and North Country-rival Clarkson (1pm).
